Abstract
PURPOSE: The percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) method was employed to study changes in neural activity and function in specific brain regions in patients with orbital fracture (OF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 20 patients with OF (12 males and 8 females) and 20 healthy controls (HCs) matched for sex, age, and weight were recruited. All participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans. The PerAF method was then applied to evaluate and detect changes in neural activity in related brain regions. Area under the curve (AUC) analysis was employed to determine differences between the two groups. RESULTS: Compared to HCs, the PerAF signal values in the Angular_L, Precuneus_R, and Parietal_Inf_R regions of the patients with OF were decreased, while the PerAF signal values in the left cerebellum, Occipital_Mid_L, Frontal_Mid_L, and Frontal_Sup_R regions were increased. The AUC showed a significant difference in brain signal between the patients with OF and HCs. CONCLUSION: We confirmed that diplopia and nystagmus in patients with OF are associated with significant changes in PerAF in characteristic areas of the brain. This finding can be useful in guiding the prognosis and treatment of patients with OF based on the signal intensity of activity in specific brain regions.
